Since 2018, ECPAT International has been working with the Youth Research Unit (YRU) of the Bureau of Market Research (Pty) Ltd (BMR) on research projects and activities related to the mandate of the organisation, which is to create a world for children, free from sexual exploitation and abuse.

One of the research projects conducted by the YRU on behalf of ECPAT International investigated commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) in South Africa, from the perspective of professionals from different specialized sectors. This project generated imperative research information, by providing an overview of the present situation and identifying opportunities on the way forward to effectively deal with CSEC.

Recently, ECPAT International collaborated with the YRU on the launch of the Briefing Paper on Sexual Exploitation of Children in South Africa. The event promoted awareness on CSEC and facilitated collaboration between stakeholders from governmental and non-governmental institutions.

The quality of the research service received from the YRU is demonstrated in the success of the research projects and activities. Overall, our positive experience resulted in the signing of a five-year Memorandum of Understanding, which will continue our existing relationship with the YRU in the future.

We recommend the Youth Research Unit of the Bureau of Market Research (Pty) Ltd (BMR), for research projects and activities involving children and young people, within a South African context and look forward to working with the passionate and skilled YRU team on future research projects.
