Bureau of Market Research (BMR). His economic forecasts on international fixed income
securities, capital markets, equities, commodity prices, currencies, inflation and domestic
production are published weekly by Bloomberg and Reuters. He has published several academic
articles in international journals. Emile won the 2019 and 2022 Thomson Reuters/Refinitiv
StarMine Award for Most Accurate Forecasting of a Foreign Exchange Rate. He was a Top 3
Finalist in the 2022 BMR Economist of the Year Competition. His econometric models of a
bank’s through-the-cycle credit exposure are utilised in fulfilling the regulatory requirement of
International Financial Reporting Standards 9. Emile established and leads an applied
Behavioural Economics capability across 15 countries delivering >10x financial return across
key strategic projects. Emile holds a PhD from the University of Hamburg, Germany and won
a Science Award from the Deutsche Bundesbank for his research. He is currently completing
an MBA (Executive Management) at the Graduate Business School of the University of Cape
Town.

Mr Schultz is the Chief economist for CEEMEA markets at BNP Paribas, based in London. He specializes in fundamental South African economic trends and is the lead economist for the South African economy, servicing BNP Paribas Group’s corporate and institutional banking operation in London, the US and Latin America as well as the institutional and corporate client base in South Africa. He also oversees a group of economists in Central and Eastern Europe, the GCC Turkey and broader emerging markets. Prior to joining BNP Paribas in 2013, he was employed at Barclays Africa where he was an economist. He holds a Bachelor of Economics Honours degree (with distinction) from Rhodes University, as well as a Master of Commerce degree in Financial Economics from Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape.
He has been ranked consistently within the top 3 forecasters of South African economic variables by Reuters/Refinitiv over the past 10 years; was the top forecaster of the policy rate in 2022 (Bloomberg); and won the Reuters/Refinitiv economist of the year in 2022 and in 2016. He has also been ranked as joint 2nd in political and industrial relations research by the Financial Mail in 2017 and 4th in the Innovative research category by the Financial Mail in 2015.
